The Garfield Movie

Based on Jim Davis’ iconic comic strips, DNEG Animation was thrilled to bring a new perspective to Garfield in 'The Garfield Movie'. The story follows Garfield’s journey from a starving stray kitten to the pampered, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving cat we all know and low. However, his comfortable life is disrupted when Garfield and Odie are kidnapped by a pair of dogs, Roland and Nolan, working for a Persian cat named Jinx. Jinx forces Garfield to team up with his estranged, deadbeat father, Vic, for a milk heist, pulling Garfield away from his life of comfort and setting the stage for a high-stakes adventure and a chance for father and son to reconnect.

DNEG Animation collaborated with Alcon Entertainment, Prime Focus Studios, and Sony to bring this beloved character to the big screen, with Jim Davis serving as executive producer. The film features a star-studded cast, including Chris Pratt as Garfield, Samuel L. Jackson as Vic, and Hannah Waddingham as Jinx. Directed by Mark Dindal, this movie was an opportunity for DNEG Animation to introduce Garfield to a new generation of fans while honouring the original characters.

As exclusive animation partners, DNEG Animation was responsible for blending fresh creativity with Davis' classic character style. The team’s approach to animation was flexible, letting performance and tone guide the style, which ranged from exaggerated cartoonish moments to more naturalistic animation. Character design was key, especially when translating 2D poses into 3D models. This challenge included ensuring that extreme expressions, like Garfield’s wide-mouthed pizza moments, were true to the original comics.

Fur simulation also posed challenges, especially with characters of varying sizes and volumes. For instance, Garfield’s fur shifted as he exaggerated his expressions, and Jinx’s long fur needed to flow naturally. Through collaboration, DNEG Animation successfully captured these elements, ensuring that character design and performance were seamlessly integrated.
