Pacific Rim Uprising

As the main VFX partner for ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’, DNEG delivered 1500 shots of Jaeger on Kaiju mayhem for the blockbuster movie.

Our VFX team was tasked with creating the dynamically spaced fully CG city environments that staged the action of the larger than life characters. For Mega Toyko, we built a futuristic version of Toyko that was populated with thousands of buildings and dressed with a library of over 300 animated Japanese holograms that were specifically created for the film. Our teams also re-created Sydney with a futuristic landscape. We gathered 3D lidar scans and reference photography of the real city, which our team then rebuilt in CG with additional space added for the large-scale battle sequences.

Our Animation team was also kept busy building and animating the giant Jaeger and Kaiju creatures. We used motion capture to establish the performance blocking for the Jaegers and then animated each performance to retime the motion and introduce the robotic nuances. We also added panels that open to reveal detailed pistons and crankshafts working mechanically inside. The Kaiju, in contrast, were entirely hand-keyed. As they combined multiple anatomical forms, we designed their movement style to be an amalgamation of different creatures and used the individual characteristics of their anatomy to drive each character’s animation.
