Avengers: Endgame

DNEG was thrilled to return to the Marvel Universe for the final instalment of the Avengers series, ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Our VFX team delivered 300 shots across many of the movie’s key action sequences.

One of our key sequences was the Captain America vs Captain America fight scene, which challenged our VFX team to deliver a fully digital environment that was mostly glass and that needed to reflect parts of the surrounding New York City environment which weren’t seen directly in-camera. We created a 360-degree CG building interior environment that fit the Stark Industries aesthetic, and a digital matte painting of the entire city to ensure accurate backdrop views and reflections. We also built a Captain America digi-double using full bodytracks of the on-set performances in order to add realistic reflections and shadows to the CG glass surfaces during the fight.

Our Creature and Animation teams were also kept busy, working on multiple builds and enhancements for hero characters including a mixture of bodytrack augmentation, digi-takeover, and full digi-double shots for Captain Marvel, as well as the build and animation of Rocket. We created a full raccoon skeleton and muscle system for Rocket’s body, face shapes and costume, and then added further facial shapes for specific key shots. Our team then perfected Rocket’s fur density, look, and animation to bring the iconic character to life.

As well as complex environment and character work, our VFX team also created the giant Benatar spaceship. Building on previous reference versions of the Benatar, we added extra greebles, painted additional decals and dirt, and sculpted dents and wobbles on flat surfaces in order to achieve the detail needed for our close-up shots. There were also several additional elements of the ship that had never been seen before - such as the landing gear system, cargo hold, and the gallery behind the cockpit - which our team designed from scratch and built in full CG.
