A Journey Behind the Visual Effects of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Dune: Part Two
Earlier this month, DNEG took centre stage at VIEW Conference 2024 in Turin, Italy, where industry leaders gathered to discuss and explore visual effects innovation. Across two highly anticipated sessions, DNEG showcased the groundbreaking VFX work of our global teams on two of this year’s most talked-about films — Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Dune: Part Two.
First up, attendees were treated to an insightful session titled “Behind the Madness: The VFX of Furiosa.” Led by our very own Production VFX Supervisor Andrew Jackson, this presentation offered an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the monumental effort that went into bringing George Miller’s highly anticipated Mad Max prequel, Furiosa, to life.
In conversation with Ian Failes, editor of Befores & Afters, Andrew dived deep into the creation of some of the film’s iconic sequences. The global DNEG VFX team, led by our Sydney studio, delivered 880 shots across 24 key sequences for the movie, including the ‘Citadel Battle’, the ‘Bullet Farm Ambush’, and the 240-shot ‘Stowaway to Nowhere’ sequence.

Then the focus shifted to Dune: Part Two, as our DNEG VFX Supervisors Stephen James and Rhys Salcombe joined Production VFX Supervisor Paul Lambert and guests for an all-encompassing deep dive into the VFX work behind the critically acclaimed film. The session, “Long Live the Fighters: The VFX of Dune: Part Two” explored how large-scale CG environments, digi-doubles, and complex FX helped bring the epic world of Arrakis to life once again, following DNEG’s Oscar-winning work on Dune: Part One.
