The Gilded Age

DNEG delivered 327 shots for Season 1 of The Gilded Age, a historical drama series from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. 

The look and feel of the environments the show was set in was key to the success of the project. The DNEG team delivered set, crowd and environment extensions, CG locations, vehicles and the aftermath of a train crash - to create authentic and immersive environments.To create a period drama in modern locations is always challenging, but with Covid delays and restrictions, these issues were amplified. To make the series as authentic to its timeline as possible, the DNEG team painstakingly replaced winter trees as they appeared on location, creating lush summer foliage to match the story’s chronology.  

DNEG provided the directors of the series with a virtual production application running on iPad which allowed them to scope shots and more easily visualise the final results. In more normal times the DNEG team would have been on set, but with safety restrictions in place, it was vital to keep crew to a minimum - and the use of virtual production techniques enabled standards to be maintained, remotely and safely.
