Shazam! Fury of the Gods

DNEG delivered over 750 shots across 26 sequences for ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ as the main VFX partner for the DC superhero movie. 

Key work for our VFX team included a wide range of hero creatures and characters, large-scale CG environments, and complex FX simulations that brought the action to life on the big screen.

One of our primary and most complex creature developments for the movie was Ladon the dragon. We built the CG character asset from scratch, using natural world references of big cat and komodo dragon anatomy in order to give Ladon a reptilian stride pattern and cat-like posture. We then sculpted an écorché with bone and muscle, and designed how the wood that makes up Lagon’s body would run on top of the muscles. Our final model was composed of three layers of wings on each side, over 1000 spikes, and close to 500 plates in the spine. We then animated the dragon to walk, run, fly, and interact with various facial expressions.

Another hero creature for our VFX team was the unicorn. We started with reference material for real horses and then adjusted the unicorn’s body structure and anatomy. For the close-up shots, our teams used a combination of blendshapes and a high-quality facial rig to construct the creature’s challenging facial expressions.

As well as our intricate creature work, our VFX teams also built several full CG environments, including the city of Philadelphia and Citizens Bank Park stadium. We also delivered multiple FX simulations for the Power of Axis effect, Tree of Life roots and Hespera’s energy dome, and created digi-doubles for Shazam and his siblings that were used in all of the fight scenes and flying sequences.
