Film Background

Directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Four Weddings and a Funeral), Love in the Time of Cholera is based on Nobel prize winner, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s critically acclaimed novel about the transcendental power of love. Set in an “in-between” time at the end of the 19th Century in Cartagena, Colombia, the story centres around one young man’s overwhelming and all-consuming love for a young girl. The girl, Fermina (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) marries another man and the devastated young man, Florentino (Javier Bardem), continues to love her from afar, while waiting half a century for her husband to die to realise their union.

Although the film is small by visual effects standards, the Double Negative team, lead by VFX Supervisor Frazer Churchill and VFX Producer, Rupert Porter, managed a diverse slate of 60+ visual effects shots. The work includes a substantial amount of environment work, CG ocean liners, paddle boats, matte paintings and extensive body replacement.
