Haunted Mansion

As lead VFX partner for ‘Haunted Mansion’, DNEG delivered close to 600 VFX shots over 14 sequences. The team was responsible for all the work inside the mansion, including bringing to life Madame Leota in her crystal ball, as well as developing the concept all the way through to the final asset for the Hatbox Ghost and creating the ghost effects that are seen throughout the movie. 

DNEG utilized a software called ‘EbSynth’ which uses AI technology to apply still frame images to animated caches. The software was used for the animated paintings in the Endless Hallway and Stretching Room sequences.


Madame Leota, played by Academy® Award-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis, is a photorealistic floating head in a magic crystal ball. DNEG worked with DI4D to capture her facial data. We created all aspects from the initial concepts to the final realisation in shots, as well as a bespoke ‘low gravity’ hair simulation.

Hatbox Ghost, played by Jared Leto, is a character developed by DNEG from concept to final asset. DNEG developed full face rig capabilities so that the character could deliver dialogue even in close-up scenes.

The team also created multiple full CG environments inside the mansion like the “Endless Hallways” and the “Stretching Room” which transitions from a cosy living room into a lethal trap with an alligator pit, quicksand, stacks of dynamite barrels and a deep chasm.
