Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ releases in the UK

DNEG celebrates its 7th collaboration with the highly-acclaimed Director

Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated action adventure ‘Tenet‘ releases today in cinemas in the UK and on September 3rd in the US. This latest release marks the seventh collaboration between DNEG and the highly-acclaimed director after ‘Dunkirk’ (2017), Interstellar (2014 – Academy Award for Best VFX), ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ (2012), ‘Inception’ (2010 – Academy Award for Best VFX), ‘The Dark Knight’ (2008) and ‘Batman Begins’ (2005).

‘Tenet’ sees Christopher Nolan collaborating once again with DNEG’s VFX team, led by Overall VFX Supervisor Andrew Jackson (with whom Nolan previously worked on the epic ‘Dunkirk’) and DNEG in-house VFX Supervisor Andrew Lockley, who supervised DNEG’s VFX work on ‘Dunkirk’, ‘Interstellar’, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Inception’, and was Compositing Supervisor and Lead on ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Batman Begins’.

Centered around the world of international espionage ‘Tenet’ is a riveting and mind-blowing adventure, in true Nolan style! The movie features around 300 VFX shots delivered by DNEG’s talented VFX crew; a shot count which includes some highly-complex VFX work which is integral to the story of ‘Tenet’.

“One of the biggest aspects for us in pre-pro was defining the look of the forward and backward effects,” said Andrew Jackson to ICG Magazine. “When somebody is traveling backward in time, what impact does that have on those who are seeing this happen while not traveling backward in time? […] It was quite a complicated puzzle to solve.”

‘Tenet’ also demonstrates once again the tight collaboration between Visual Effects and Special Effects in Nolan’s films:

“[Andrew] helped us achieve such an enormous amount practically. There were still very complicated visual effects for the team at DNEG, but Andrew’s expertise and background in on-set effects benefitted us enormously, allowing him to work well with Scott [Fisher, Special Effects Supervisor] and with Production Designer Nathan Crowley on design, while helping with the stunt team and all of the other disciplines,” said Nolan.

DNEG would like to thank Christopher Nolan and everyone at Warner Bros. and Syncopy for another fantastic collaboration! And a huge thank you to our talented VFX crew.
