Ahead of submissions for our Graduate Trainee Scheme opening next Monday, we thought you might find a few Top Tips and this handy Information Faq useful! Read through, get prepping and see you back here next week when applications open, cool? 🙂
2015’s brilliant Dneg Graduate Trainees….Will you be in the frame for this year’s Graduate Trainee Scheme?
WILL THE GRADUATE TRAINEE SCHEME BE PAID?
We are offering this scheme with the support of the Creative Skillset Trainee Finder Scheme, so yes, you will be paid a Trainee Allowance, which is at a rate equivalent to an entry-level salary.
WILL DOUBLE NEGATIVE COVER TRAVEL EXPENSES?
No, this is something you will be expected to cover out of the Trainee Allowance that successful applicants will be paid.
CAN I APPLY IF I HAVEN’T GRADUATED?
Dneg’s Graduate Trainee Scheme is for those that have recently graduated from a VFX specific course only. As we are hoping to be able to offer full-time contracts to the most successful trainees once the scheme finishes, you will need to have finished your degree.
WHAT IF I GRADUATED LAST YEAR, AM I STILL ELIGIBLE?
We are more then happy to consider applications from graduates that finished studying up to 2 years ago (2014).
CAN I APPLY IF I’VE ALREADY GOT INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE?
Due to the requirements of the Trainee Finder Scheme, we are only able to consider graduates with less than 12 months paid experience within the VFX industry. If you have more than a year’s experience we would encourage you to apply through the usual recruitment channels.
CAN I APPLY IF I REQUIRE A VISA TO WORK IN THE UK?
Unfortunately Dneg’s Graduate Trainee Scheme is only available to those who do not require a visa towork in the UK.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY STUDENT VISA IS STILL VALID?
Even if you have a valid student visa we are not able to consider you for the scheme unfortunately. A student visa only allows the holder to work up to 20 hours per week.
I’M INTERESTED IN GOING IN TO ANIMATION, CAN I APPLY FOR THE GRADUATE TRAINEE SCHEME?
Right now we are not able to consider those with an interest in Animation. We are hoping to open the scheme up to Animators next year, to gain experience within our new Feature Animation division.
DO DNEG HELP WITH RELOCATION/ACCOMMODATION?
We do not offer assistance with relocation and/or accommodation. For the successful graduates, we will be able to provide you with a relocation guide that gives some good tips on where to look when relocating to London.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT ON THE ASSESSMENT DAY?
During the Assessment Day the successful graduates will be divided into their chosen disciplines, and will be required to present their showreel to several members of the Dneg team, so be prepared! There will also be a 1:1 Speed Interviewing session and a networking session, where you will be able to talk to some of the top talent from the Dneg crew.
CAN I SUBMIT MORE THAN ONE APPLICATION?
Please avoid submitting more than one application. We will only be able to progress with one application per person, so make sure you apply for your preferred discipline and department (Film or TV)
I CAN’T ATTEND THE ASSESSMENT DAY DUE TO UNIVERSITY EXAMS, WHAT DO I DO?
If you can’t attend due to final year exams, please contact us directly and we will get back to you.
WHT DO I DO IF I HAVE A HOLIDAY OR OTHER COMMITMENTS DURING THE 3-MONTH SCHEME?
The 3-month scheme is an intensive learning experience, so we would suggest that you avoid taking blocks of time off during the 3 month period if possible. This is so you avoid missing out on valuable training and on-show experience. We want you to make the most of your time with us! You will be entitled to time off during the scheme (up to 5 days can be taken off without this affecting the payment of your Trainee Allowance) but will need to be signed off by your Supervisor.
DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING ELSE TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE GRADUATE TRAINEE SCHEME?
Yes, you need to have applied, and been approved, for the Creative Skillset Trainee Finder Scheme. Please make sure you sign up prior to applying to avoid any hiccups later on down the line. You can sign up for the scheme here https://app.hiive.co.uk/traineefinder/
Make sure your CV is laid out clearly. Avoid filling it up with images and fancy fonts. You’d be surprised, but we often see CVs with no contact details! We will need to contact you if your application is successful, so please make sure your telephone number and email address are listed at or near the top.
Here at Dneg, we love receiving applications that include a detailed covering letter explaining why you are applying for a position with us. We want to know how much you want the chance to train here with the world’s leading talent!
When putting together your showreel, make sure you only include your best work. Avoid submitting anything that’s longer than 1:30 minutes, and there’s absolutely no need to include some loud funky music. We never watch reels with the sound on!
Make sure you only apply once!
IF YOU’RE SELECTED FOR THE ASSESSMENT DAY:
DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Research the company. You will have a chance to meet and speak with some of our talented artists, and we always love meeting people that know loads about Dneg! You’ll also be able to ask any questions that you might have on what you’ve discovered whilst doing your research.
SHARPEN UP YOUR PRESENTATION SKILLS
As part of the Assessment Day, you will be required to present your showreel so start preparing. It’s always a bit nerve wracking when you have to present, and we really don’t want to you go blank (we’ve been there and done that so know it can be a scary thing to do)! Practice makes perfect and will stop you being so nervous on the day.
